Staff profiles

Let our staff tell you in their own words what it's like to work here at Loch Lomond Golf Club.

Calum Fowlis, 25, is Supervisor within Spikes Bar. Calum joined the Club back in February 2020 managing to work only one month in his new role before lockdown kicked in.

My alarm goes off…

Get out of bed, get some breakfast, then get ready for work. The time I get up varies on what shift I’m on, whether that be morning or nights.  When I’m getting ready I try and think ahead and look at emails so I know what shift to expect and what I need to be prepared for.

I’m responsible for…

My role within the Club in simplest terms is to make sure everything goes smoothly on the day. What is also key is that everyone has a great time and leaves happy. This role helps me expand myself and be more of a leader which I haven’t had in previous roles. It also helps me share my knowledge that I have within hospitality in terms of food and beverage.

I got the job…

I have worked in hospitality for 5 years now and wouldn’t change it for the world having started out aged 18 in my local pub, which was my family’s pub, while I pursued my career of becoming a PE teacher having studied a BA in Sports Coaching at university. I then had a couple of similar roles in other establishments in Helensburgh, and having decided that hospitality was where I wanted to be I was looking to find a role that would give me more responsibility.

I got the job at Loch Lomond by applying initially for the internship process. I saw that as an opportunity to learn on the job and progress to the role I was seeking. Having attended the assessment day and everything going well, I was given the opportunity to take on a supervisor role straight away! This was the best result I could have asked for and I’m thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the Club.

My typical day…

Depends if I am working or not. If I am working, then I’m just killing time until I start. If I’m off, I’m normally out and about either visiting my family or spending the day with friends.

My most memorable moment…

One of my most memorable moments was when my dad opened his pub for the first time and I look back at that and I think if that didn’t happen then I don’t think I would ever have been in the hospitality industry. Which makes me believe what’s meant for you, won’t pass you by.

The best part of my job…

The interaction I have and how personal the Club is. It is also one of the best places I have seen so far within my career where I’m going to benefit as an individual and expand my knowledge of food and beverage.

After Work…

When I’m not working, I like to be with my family and spend quality time with them. Since starting work at Loch Lomond I am trying to get into golf more and I try and get out with my dad whenever I have the time. If I’m not with family, I’m with my friends and out socialising and going out for meals. I try my best to keep playing football but working at weekends it is difficult to commit to that. I am also a keen sailor and try and get out on a boat whenever I can. I am a member of Cove Sailing which I have been a part of for 13 years and I have been racing on boats since I was 14.

My Plan B:

I will always have my family’s pub to fall back on, but if I didn’t go there I would use my degree and go into a job within sport, like going back to coaching within a Club like Active Schools Scotland.
